hi i'm chelsea tara and i'm a new media video and web artist and sculptor
born into the first generation of artists to grow up with computers and smartphones, tara’s multi-media portfolio demonstrates an intuitive and curious response to the information tech revolution, the digitisation of cultural forms and the ever-growing commodification of the web.

drawing on influence from the neo-dada, net.art and contemporary lo-fi art movements, tara’s work corrupts elitist and mainstream notions of ownership, authorship, skill and value when it comes to the making of contemporary art.

she works primarily in sculpture and digital new media, playing with concepts of immateriality, longevity and modern forms of human connection and communication. as such, her interactive work seduces complacent viewers into moments of performativity and engagement.

by confronting and providing resources for the viewer to engage with and manipulate the art to give form to what they want to see represented, her work mirrors the open-source content movement of early net.artists and there there is a prominent sense of anti-consumerist democracy in the making of her work.

tara’s playful, colourful lo-fi aethestic in her sculpture, website and video making is demonstrative of her studies and speculations on the nature of art in the future, in which she believes elite art institutions must be redefined, humbled and more inclusive (and held to account when they are not). much of her work pokes fun and satirically criticises the culture of art and society as it is today, challenging gallery conventions and advocating for the more layman-accessible aesthetic of the ‘diy’.

ultimately, it is tara’s philosophy that in the future, either everything can be art, or nothing can be. either everyone can be an artist or nobody can be. either all art is good, or all art is bad.
